Do you know how to change a tire? If you have never done so before, it is never a bad idea to practice. If it is your first time and you are on the side of the road, there are a few things you should make sure of before starting. Be sure to check your car or truck’s owner’s manual for details specific to your vehicle, such as where you’ll find the jack kit or spare tire. You will also definitely want to be aware of your surroundings. Should you not feel you are in a safe area, you can call the local police department for assistance.

  • Remove your vehicle’s spare tire and jack. Be sure to check the inflation level of the spare tire – if the pressure is too low, you will wither have to call a tow truck or find a nearby business where you can fill the spare.
  • The jack kit will likely include a tire iron for removing the lug nuts from the wheel. Use it first to loosen the lug nuts, but be careful not to remove them yet. If it requires a lot of force to loosen the lug nuts, it is best to do so while the vehicle has yet to be jacked up.
  • Block the three other tires to secure the vehicle and thus prevent any unwanted rolling.
  • It is not necessary to raise the car any higher than you need to replace the tire. Simply raise the corner with the flat tire high enough off the pavement to put the spare tire on.
  • Now you should finish removing the lug nuts from the center of the wheel and pull off the entire wheel.
  • Place the spare tire on your vehicle.
  • Replace the lug nuts, however do not tighten them all the way yet.
  • Lower the vehicle by turning the jack in the opposite direction that you did to raise it up.
  • Finally, tighten the lug nuts. After a few successful turns, rotate clockwise to tighten the next lug nut. Repeat this process until each lug nut is securely in place.
